According to the Office of National Statistics men do an average of 16 hours of unpaid household work a week compared to 26 hours carried out by women. Unpaid household work includes cooking, cleaning adult care, laundry and driving. Even with these hours of unpaid domestic chores, 1 in 4 households employ a cleaner in an industry that is valued at over £24 billion. As great as it is to have the extra help, if they are not self-employed or employed through an agency you will be responsible for their employment. This means meeting their rights including holiday and sick pay, as well as collecting the right tax and passing it on.
