The food sector produces 0.4 million tonnes of avoidable food waste every year. This includes unsold meals as well as waste from preparation and plates. James Swansborough-Smith from ARTea Room was shocked to hear the figures.

This led him to make the decision to do even more to minimise his waste. Here viewed all aspects of his business including food waste from preparation and plates, what was being recycled and could be recycled, to where and how he uses plastics. A great believer in well-being and delivering quality food, James also reviewed his menu to offer more healthy options. The results have been amazing, not only has James seen real business benefits but now he produces very little waste that is not recycled or re-used. All staff are trained to separate the recycling and use the composting wheelie bin where appropriate. James has chosen glass bottles over plastics and these are recycled or turned into new items and sold for charity.

The ARTea Room was also awarded ‘Silver’ in the South Northants Eat Out, Eat Healthy Awards. Happily, you will still find the same great tasty dishes on the menu and of course, our well-being would definitely be affected if we could no longer enjoy those delicious Cream Teas!
